What I’m Doing in Ireland in February

IBrenda Chapman Ireland speaking tourt’s funny how things turn out. Years ago I tried to get a film made that was set in Ireland, but it didn’t work out. Then I created a film set in Scotland that will be released. When I was done with that film, suddenly Ireland was calling me!

I received an email from a gentleman (Barry O’Donoghue is his name – no question at all as to where he’s from!) at IADT – The Institute of Art Design and Technology in Dublin – asking me if I would have a little time to spare to fly over and talk about story. Let’s see—a little time to spare for a trip to a place I’ve always wanted to visit and talk about one of my favorite subjects, and, better yet, they’ll pay for the flight? Well, that’s a no-brainer!

After some back and forth about dates, it comes down to this: I leave today and will spend two weeks talking to hundreds of students and professionals from both IADT, Barley Films and speaking on a couple of panels for IADT and two other universities. I’ll talk about story, storyboarding, scripts, directing, pitching, inspiration and instinct… and whatever else might come up.

Not only am I excited to see such a beautiful country, but I’m thrilled and honored that they have invited me to speak.

And on top of all that, Barry has offered to have me shown around on the couple days I’ll have off… if I like “wild coastlines and ancient history!” I think they’ve done their research well.

Now comes the hard part – living up to expectations! If you’ll be attending any of these events, please make a point of introducing yourself while you’re there. I can’t wait to get there!

If you’ll excuse me, I need to finish packing—always the hardest part of any trip, right?

That was me indeed! I tried to get over to say a proper hello earlier but everyone was so eager to talk to you! (Plus i’m only a second year so I didn’t want to intrude on 3rd/4th yr time) It was wonderful getting to speak to you in such a casual setting, and i’m looking SO forward to the talk on Monday. If it’s half as good as today it will be amazing! Your visit seems to have inspired everybody to work harder already. Hope you have a good weekend seeing all the sights! :)

        • Brenda Chapman

Hey, second years are people, too! :) I’m so glad I met you, at least. Thanks for the vote of confidence. See you Monday!

    • Brenda Chapman

Life has a funny way of opening doors after we thought we passed them. I must admit that I’m a bit jealous … I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland! I’ll make my way over the little pond at some point. Keep up your inspirational work!

    • Brenda Chapman

It is quite a wonderful thing, the opening of doors.
Don’t be jealous – just get on a plane and go! It’s beautiful here and the people are marvelous! Hope you make it someday soon.
      Thank you, Vaughn. :)

would love to be there…I’m kinda doing the same in florence now- talking to students about story (I’m an Aardman guy) and love the positive vibes of discussion and enthusiansm for story. But I’d love to see how a pro does it! hope the rest of the trip is a blast.

    • Brenda Chapman

If you’re an “Aardman guy”, the you ARE a pro! :) I’d love to see you how you do it, too. Florence is such a beautiful city! Did you ever think we’d be doing things like this when you got into animation?

      • Anonymous

haha. no. I still think its ridiculous that cartoonists can be feted as master storytellers and wise people. Well. I guess we are. :)

        • Brenda Chapman

Maybe YOU are, but looking at all the typos in my first reply, I’m questioning my qualifications! :)

  • JenKlein

I could not think of a better host than Barry or a better guest than you, Brenda! Hope your trip has been lovely.

    • Brenda Chapman

Aw. Thank you, Jen! I’ve had a wonderful time! And Barry has outdone himself.
