Why I’m A Meryl Streep Fan Girl

AWhy I'm a Meryl Streep Fan Girlll right. So. I recently watched The Iron Lady. (pause) I cannot BELIEEEEEEEEEVE that she did it AGAIN!!! I sat through a Meryl Streep movie that I went to see because it was a Meryl Streep movie, and completely forgot that I was watching a Meryl Streep movie! How does she DO that?

I watch movies all the time because of an actor I want to see or a director whose filmmaking I want to observe. I’m usually aware at least at some point during the film that, “Ooh. I like that about that actor,” or “That is sooo that director.” With Ms. Streep, I can’t recall I’ve ever done that until after the film is over and I wake up from the spell she cast on me.

I mean, I wasn’t watching Margaret Thatcher, I was watching Meryl Streep, right? WRONG. I was watching Margaret Thatcher for the entire movie… until I woke up from the trance broken by the credit roll. Just like I watched Julia Child in all of her big and wonderful bubbliness, the absolutely loveable Jane, determined Sister Beauvier, high-powered Miranda Priestly, tragic Clarissa, Francesca… ah… Francesca…, vain Madeline Ashton, another Julia – so sweet and perfect, narcissistic Mary Fischer, naïve and dingo-ridden Lindy, Karen in all her epic-ness, another totally different, and not quite as well read Karen of a southern persuasion, the tragically and beautifully heart broken and damaged Sophie, and the woman who I hated and loved at the same time, Joanna Kramer—the first to entrance me, before so many others. I haven’t even named them all! (Don’t worry. I’ll stop here and let you think of the others yourself.)

She covers it all. With drama, of course, she’s more than eloquent—she’s astounding. Her sense of timing and humor in comedy is simply brilliant!

And then there’s that fact that she hasn’t had plastic surgery—and openly speaks against it. Wow. Integrity, too. Yes, it’s integrity! I hear you out there. “Well, that’s easy for her to say, she’s gorgeous!” I agree, but many a gorgeous actor has succumbed to the knife in fear and insecurity… as well as bullying from agents and studio heads. No, Ms. Streep has her head in the right place (er… pardon the pun). Her integrity also includes the many social causes she supports. (That’s another topic for another time.)

I look forward to her next film… and the one after that… and the one after that… ad infinitum.

Brenda, I’ve loved all of your posts, but this blog especially resonated with me as I am a huge, HUGE fan of Meryl Streep. I agree – her ability to utterly immerse herself in each role is truly amazing. I’m kicking myself, however, because I haven’t seen some of her older movies, and I’m changing that THIS WEEKEND! I wonder what you think of “The River Wild”? I know it’s not one of her most acclaimed roles, but I still remember seeing this movie in the theater and was completely captivated by her plight and how she outsmarted the good-looking but sinister Wade (Kevin Bacon.) Now might be the time to confess that I haven’t yet seen “The Iron Lady” – again, something that changes this weekend!!

It has been a long time since I’ve seen “The River Wild”, but I remember that I loved her performance. Have fun this weekend!!

I left The Iron Lady in awe of her. I thought that was one of the best acting jobs I’ve ever seen because she totally embodied Maggie Thatcher. I haven’t seen many of her movies but those I have I agree with you. She becomes the character so much that you forget who you’re watching.

She’s simply amazing. And I’m so glad that she has been so recognized for her amazingness! :)

Love, love, love Meryl! Went to a Q&A of her and the director of The Iron Lady. They were both wonderful and discussed the importance of women in film. I know Ms. Streep is a big believer in honoring women and their work… She mentioned she’s working to get a Museum of Women’s History in D. C. So cool! She always makes me feel for characters that would usually just make me angry: Miranda Priestly and Margaret Thatcher probably the two any other actress would have left me not caring about. But you’ve said it all best, always looking forward to her next! :)

Another big Meryl fan. She has such poise and grace. I have not had the chance yet to see Iron Lady (I think I’ve seen 5 or 6 movies in the theater since having children!), but I can’t wait. It looks like another fabulous Meryl movie!

I read recently that she made Manhattan & Kramer vs. Kramer at the same time. OMG! And they are both so good! I read Sophie’s Choice a couple of years ago, but haven’t had the stuff to see the film. Is it every bit as gut-wrenching? The book absolutely broke my heart in pieces.

Every bit! I get a big lump in my throat just thinking about it. She was devastatingly wonderful.
Thanks for you fan POV! :)

I know she is so great! I think its difficult to play a real person and it doesn’t always work. I haven’t seen the Iron Lady yet but as Julia Child I completely forgot it was her! She is one talented lady.

      Indeed she is. :)
